Mission & Vision

Imagine being able to ride bikes with your entire family on Sheppard Avenue without any fear. With protected bike lanes it would be a fun, easy, and healthy experience getting to school, the grocery store, or your favourite dinner spot.

Calling for protected bike lanes on Sheppard Avenue is about more than transportation — our streets have the power to connect communities, improve our mental and physical health, provide space for children to play, and allow businesses to thrive.

Cycle Toronto is advocating for reimagining our streets to their full potential and making them work better for everyone. While people will still be able to drive, other options, like biking, will be a lot more appealing with safe spaces on the road. This is a conversation about safe, healthy, and sustainable mobility options for people across our entire city.

We pledge to support this vision through our Move365 framework. Join the pledge with us by signing your name below.

Rendering Sheppard Avenue facing east toward Leslie Street by City of Toronto

Context

Protected bike lanes on Sheppard Avenue would transform connectivity north of the 401. Every network needs to start somewhere and Sheppard would be the beginning of a network of protected, connected bike lanes on major roads in North York.

Move365 Sheppard is part of our larger goal of connecting communities across Toronto by expanding the cycling network to connect neighbourhoods, give people safe travel options and reduce reliance on cars. Sheppard complements or connects many existing and forthcoming cycling routes.

What’s Next?

Redesigning Sheppard will be a complex process and will need to unfold in stages. Beginning with Yonge Street to Leslie Street which will connect to protected bike lanes on Willowdale Avenue, the trails along the Don River, and an approved project to redesign Yonge Street, including bike lanes.

Consulting with key community stakeholders, the public, and City staff at every step of the way will be key to ensuring each section works for the people that live and work there. One of the primary focuses of this campaign is to advocate for the redesign of streets in traditionally underinvested communities. As we all discovered during the pandemic, public space and the ability to move around safely is vital to our mental and physical wellbeing.

Cycle Toronto works by empowering community groups, collaborating with local BIAs, and engaging with residents to build active and connected neighbourhoods that meet their needs. Cycling infrastructure needs to move beyond the downtown core — sign the petition below to get Toronto moving.
