Progress on Port Union Road Bike Lanes & Public Meeting

You may have heard that the City’s proposing a slew of cycling projects to be built in 2022-2024. We shared an overview of the proposed Cycling Plan update so that you can email City Council before they vote on the proposed projects.

One of those projects is for a Port Union bikeway. A second public meeting is happening Tuesday about the Port Union Road improvements. We asked you to attend the first meeting in May and ask for three things:

1. Physical separation for the bike lanes
2. Better cycling network connections by extending the bike lanes north over Highway 401 and south to the Waterfront Trail
3. Traffic calming to align with current City of Toronto goals i.e. narrowing driving lanes instead of adding additional lanes

Now, with your support, the project team is proposing a raised bikeway separated from car traffic by a concrete curb and extending the bike lanes north over the 401! Cycle Toronto will continue to advocate for improvements to the design, including:

1. Continuous physical separation, even near intersections and bus stops
2. More distance between the bikeway and roadway to improve comfort and safety
3. Protected intersection designs 

Port Union Road could benefit from protected intersection designs, such as this example proposed for Sheppard Avenue in North York.

It’s important for the City to hear from individual voices as well. Please attend the upcoming meeting, share your enthusiasm for improvements, and reiterate your desire for a safer Port Union Road that allows for healthy, affordable, and environmentally sound transportation for people of all ages and abilities.
