About our organization

Cycle Toronto is a member-supported not-for-profit organization that works to make Toronto a healthy, safe and vibrant cycling city for all. We are focused on advocacy, education and encouragement, as we work to shape policy and infrastructure, and build community to transform our city’s cycling culture. We engage a diversity of people in our work, pursuing evidence-based solutions that make cycling a viable option for all Torontonians.

Cycle Toronto and CultureLink’s cycling programs are collaborating again this year in the selection and training of Cycling Educators for spring, summer, and fall 2022.

Programs and responsibilities

Cycle Toronto

Cycle Toronto will be hiring up to 15 Cycling Educators to deliver workshops in-person and virtually, perform minor tune-ups and speak to the public at our pop-up bike safety stations, and support our group rides. Running outreach and our Bike Valet service at community events are among other potential opportunities cycling educators may take on.

Workshops
Cycling Educators deliver free safe cycling, bike maintenance, and mobile workshops at workplaces, libraries, public spaces, and online. Workshops generally over lunch hour and evenings during the week, and on weekends. We will be hosting workshops and creating videos in multiple languages, so the ability to translate and deliver workshops in a language other than English is a big asset.

Ride Guides
Cycling Educators are our ride ambassadors, leading small group bicycle rides we call mobile workshops, and support with Cycle Toronto’s larger rides, such as the annual Bike to Work Day Group Commute, the Coldest Day of the Year Ride, and our Big Toronto Bike Ride.

Bike Safety Stations & Outreach
Cycling Educators host free weekly pop-up bike safety stations across the city on Tuesday & Thursday evenings and Saturday afternoons from April to October. Cycling Educators carry our tent and supplies with our e-cargo bike and bike trailers, or using their personal bicycle.
 

CultureLink

CultureLink will hire up to 10 On-Call Cycling Educators to support cycling programs on an occasional basis, teaching road safety, cycling skills and basic bike maintenance to children, youth and adults. Cycling Educators may be required to ride a bicycle in mixed traffic in all neighborhoods of Toronto, and they are expected to model safe and responsible cycling behavior. They work in locations across the City, including at the CultureLink Bike Hub and schools.

The Bike to School Project
The Bike to School Project provides Cycling Education programming in schools in TDSB. Cycling Educators deliver cycling education programs on several active transportation topics, including road safety, cycling skills and basic bike maintenance.

The CultureLink Bike Hub
The CultureLink Bike Hub provides free access to bicycle parts and tools, support from experienced bike mechanics, and workshops and training on bike repair. Funded by the City of Toronto as a Community Reduce and Reuse Program, the CultureLink Bike Hub fosters a culture of repair and reuse. Cycling Educators support the general operations of the Bike Hub, alongside on-site Project Workers.

Bike Host
Bike Host is a newcomer mentorship program that loans newcomers a bicycle and pairs them with an experienced cyclist mentor. Mentors and mentees get together for bicycle rides and other outings. Cycling Educators provide bicycle skills training to mentors and mentees.

All Cycling Educators and Ride Guides are expected to complete a report following each workshop or program, documenting positive and negative outcomes, participation, and other information, and to contribute constructive feedback on their programs.

Terms and compensation

For Cycle Toronto, Cycling Educators are compensated at a rate of $20 per hour, with the equivalent of 3 hours ($60) expected per safe cycling presentation for lead presenters, 4 hours ($80) for mechanics workshop lead presentations, and 1.5 hours ($30) for supporting presenters. Educators are expected to use their own bicycles which conform to the requirements of the Highway Traffic Act to both present during workshops and for travel. Limited compensation for public transportation is available with consideration given to geographical distance.  For bike maintenance workshops, a stand and tools will be provided, although Cycling Educators are welcome to use their own if this is more convenient.
 
In 2022-23, CultureLink's On-Call Cycling Educators will be paid $22.76 per hour, shifts usually 3+ hours. Details can be found here: https://www.culturelink.ca/about-us/get-involved/employment-opportunities/

Required Qualifications

• Strong public speaking and presentation skills
• Strong cycling skills, including cycling in traffic outside of downtown
• CAN-BIKE Instructor or CAN-BIKE Level 4 certification *
• Emergency First Aid / CPR certification *
• Access to a personal computer and comfort using videoconferencing software for delivery of workshops
• Ability to work cooperatively as part of a team
• Punctuality and reliability
• Availability during weekdays and some weekends during spring and summer
• Successful completion of program training (estimated at 14 hours, paid at the rate of $22.76/hour) on Monday, March 28 and (for CutureLink presenters) on Wednesday, March 30 (9am to 4pm each day).
• (for bike maintenance workshops) Strong skills in bicycle maintenance and repair
• (for CultureLink programs) Proven ability to engage children and youth in an institutional setting
• (for CultureLink programs) Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Screening (police check), original copy within the past 6 months

* Note: A CAN-BIKE Level 4 course (12 hour commitment) and Emergency First Aid / CPR course (8 hour commitment) may be offered at no charge to otherwise successful candidates prior to the beginning of work.

Assets

• Experience teaching road safety and cycling skills
• Track record of engagement with Toronto’s cycling community
• Fluency in Arabic, Bengali, Cantonese, English, Farsi, French, Hindi, Korean, Mandarin, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Tagalog, Tamil, Urdu, or other languages.
