Advocacy Committee

The Advocacy Committee provides advice on advocacy campaigns to Cycle Toronto’s board and staff and acts as a coordination hub between various staff- and volunteer-led advocacy activities. The Committee is working on a growing list of Cycle Toronto position statements. In the coming year, the Committee will also provide advocacy advice for Cycle Toronto’s next strategic plan. Committee meetings take place once a month (with every second meeting being a joint meeting with the Ward Advocacy Group and Working Group Leaders).

We are looking to build an inclusive and gender-balanced committee of cycling advocates with a variety of backgrounds such as: urban/suburban cycling, City Hall advocacy, working with Toronto’s diverse communities, traffic engineering/street design, and campaign strategy. We would ask you to commit to a two-year term and to participate in Cycle Toronto advocacy activities via a Ward Advocacy Group and/or a Working Group.

The Advocacy Committee currently has up to four vacancies to be filled by Cycle Toronto members for the 2016-18 term. If you would like to join, please send a brief (100-200 word) description of your interests and relevant experience to Liz Sutherland, Advocacy Committee co-chair, via liz.sutherland@cycleto.ca by September 9, 2016.

Bike Parking Working Group

New this year, the Cycle Toronto Bike Parking Working Group will address the acute need for more plentiful and secure bike parking in Toronto. The number of post-and-rings installed by the City has flatlined for several years while cycling trips keep going up! Meanwhile, many private residential and commercial buildings could use more bike parking as well. Join the Bike Parking Working Group to develop strategic advocacy initiatives that aim to increase the supply of bike parking throughout Toronto! Trails Working Group

The Cycle Toronto Trails Working Group develops recommendations on how Toronto’s off-road network of paths/trails can serve the needs of utilitarian and recreational cyclists of all ages and abilities. Issues include trail location, connectivity, safety, accessibility, maintenance, and wayfinding. The Trails Working Group will be especially focused on the Lower Don Trail in the short term, but there are always plenty of other opportunities for trail advocacy!
