Cycle Toronto is now a charity! What this means for my membership FAQ

Youth on bikes queue up at a Cycle Toronto tent

Cycle Toronto is officially a charity! While we can’t hear your applause, we know that this is a big deal and so we want to be sure that you know that it does not change our ability to advocate for the change we want to see.We will remain a non-partisan organization and will be able to pursue funding that wasn’t available to us previously. We will also be able to issue you charitable tax receipts for your contributions to our organization.

In early 2021, we sent out a survey to all Cycle Toronto members to get feedback on our member discount program, the services we offer, and what benefits were currently being used. Members overwhelmingly responded that having a tax receiptable membership is of the most value, and that people remain members of our organization primarily to support our advocacy and education work.

Effective March 30, 2021, Cycle Toronto membership and benefits for new and renewed members have changed to reflect results of the survey and we will be phasing out the member discount program, flat-fix coverage, and free or discounted lock cutting service.

Members remain a vital part of the Cycle Toronto community by supporting and informing the work we do.

What do I get with membership now?

If you purchase or renew a membership on or after March 30, 2021 you will receive:

  • An official tax receipt (subject to yearly minimum of $20)
  • Proof of membership
  • Voting rights for our Annual General Meeting (AGM)

What benefits are no longer available?

Based on member feedback and due to an extremely low uptake of member benefits such as our member discount program, and our flat-fix program which is available at a higher level of membership, we have discontinued these benefits going forward in favour of providing you with a tax receipt. We will offer our lock cutting service at a competitive market rate, which is available to non-members as well.  If you purchase or renew a membership on or after March 30, 2021 you will no longer be eligible for:

  • Member Discount Program
  • Lower rates for flat-fix coverage
  • Free or discounted lock cutting service

I purchased my membership before March 30, 2021. Do I still get benefits?

Yes! We are offering a grace period for current members as we transition. If you joined or renewed your membership prior to March 30, 2021 you will continue to receive benefits offered at that time until you renew your membership or your membership expires. Proof of membership and expiry prior to March 30, 2022 will be required at point of service. Your benefits include:

  • Proof of membership
  • Voting rights for our Annual General Meeting (AGM)
  • Member Discount Program
  • Lower rates for flat-fix coverage for Sustainer, Patron and Director level members
  • Lock cutting service at market rates

As of March 30, 2022 all members will be in our new membership structure.

How much does membership cost?

$30/year or $5/month. If you wish to give more than this amount, we encourage you to make an  additional donation. All donations and membership dues will be tabulated into one tax receipt for the calendar year.

I used to have a higher level membership. How do I support Cycle Toronto now?

Thank you for your interest! We have flattened the membership levels to remove the complexity, not because we no longer need your support. You can make a monthly, annual, or one-time donation to support us at the same funding level. As long as your member dues and donations for the calendar year total $20 or more, you will be eligible to receive a charitable tax receipt.

How much do I need to contribute to get a tax receipt?

Any amount over $20 totalled throughout the year. All memberships are above this threshold and you will receive a charitable tax receipt with one exception. If you join as a monthly member late in the year and your total contributions are less than $20, you will not receive a charitable tax receipt.

I have more questions. Who do I contact?
