Mission & Vision

Imagine being able to ride bikes with your entire family on Eglinton Avenue without any fear in Etobicoke, Scarborough, and Midtown. With protected bike lanes it would be a fun, easy, and healthy experience getting to school, the grocery store, or your favourite dinner spot.

Calling for protected bike lanes on Eglinton Avenue is about more than transportation — our streets have the power to connect communities, improve our mental and physical health, provide space for children to play, and allow businesses to thrive.

Cycle Toronto is advocating for reimagining our streets to their full potential and making them work better for everyone. While people will still be able to drive, other options, like biking, will be a lot more appealing with safe spaces on the road. This is a conversation about safe, healthy, and sustainable mobility options for people across our entire city.

We pledge to support this vision through our Move365 framework. Join the pledge with us by signing your name below.

Context

Years of construction of the Eglinton Avenue Crosstown LRT has hindered the growth of communities along Eglinton and the businesses along the corridor. The complete street project includes  plans for protected bike lanes, better pedestrian infrastructure, and other streetscape improvements.

Completing protected bike lanes now — by the time the LRT opens, a date that keeps getting pushed further and further —  will allow for recovery to begin sooner and proceed faster by creating a safe and vibrant  street for people of all ages and abilities who will have more options  on how they get around— whether it is to ride bikes, walk, use mobility devices, take transit, or drive.

Cycle Toronto applauds the City’s work towards implementing complete street guidelines on this important east-west corridor. We’re calling on the City to find a way to implement all of the proposed improvements in 2023 for phase I (Keele St to Mount Pleasant Ave).

City staff is currently reviewing the feedback provided by the public and will be submitting the finalized designs to City Council in June 2023. If approved, the project is slated for installation in the late summer or fall of 2023.

Updates to Proposed Designs

The final rounds of public consultation are now complete. The materials from these consultations can be viewed here, and include an overview of the proposed designs. Some highlights include:

  1. A new design for the section of Eglinton Avenue that passes by the Allen Road Expressway, as this is a particularly dangerous intersection for cyclists and pedestrians.
  2. Some exciting improvements to the public realm, including the installation of new parkettes at 6 different locations along the corridor.
  3. Contraflow bike lanes on north-south routes that intersect with Eglinton to provide connections to the Cedarvale Ravine and Beltline trails.

What’s next?

In the short term, affordable quickbuild materials, like those seen on Danforth Avenue and Yonge Street, could be used to establish protected bikeways, patios, and greenery, while allowing for parking.

Permanent improvements along all portions of the LRT from Weston Road to Kennedy Road need to come shortly after.

Connecting Eglinton will mean extending protected bike lanes beyond the boundaries of the LRT; they’ll need to connect to the multi-use path west of Jane Street, and in Scarborough, improving the RapidTO facilities with dedicated cycling lanes to Kingston Road.

We’re calling on the City to find a way to implement all the proposed improvements for Phase I in 2023. This will go a long way to making this important corridor safe for people who live, work, or travel through the area. Implementing this project is an important step towards meeting the council approved 2022-2024 Near term Cycling Network Plan and supporting the City meet its target of achieving 75% of all trips under 5km by active modes of transportation. Once complete, we look forward to seeing Phase II take place, which will see the complete street extend from Mount Pleasant Road and Brentcliffe Roadwhich will mean extending protected bike lanes beyond the boundaries of the LRT. This will need to connect to the multi-use path west of Jane Street, and in Scarborough, improving the RapidTO facilities with dedicated cycling lanes to Kingston Road. Residents, school children, and commuters in the Don Valley West Ward deserve to have safer streets.
